Full Text

Bancroft the Historian. Mr. Bancroft has been guilty of a very paltry movement, in altering the record of his honest opinions expressed in his History of the United States without assigning any reasons therefor. In all the former editions of this celebrated history, occurs the following passage:

"Nowhere in the world, have life, liberty and property been safer than in Rhode Island."

In the 10th edition, however, this phrase has been silently altered as follows, for reasons which those who know Geo. Bancroft as a politician can surmise:

"Nowhere in the world, were life, liberty and property, safer than in Rhode Island."

Can any one have confidence in the statements or opinions of a Historian, who would be guilty of a trick like this?
