WESTERN FORESTS.

Civil Service Commissioner Roosevelt Wants Them Protected.

WASHINGTON, May 15.—Speaking of the reservation of the California tracts containing the Mariposa trees and the extensive Yosemite Park, Civil Service Commissioner Roosevelt says: "I wish there might be some way of turning the Yosemite Park into a national, as well as a State reservation, including in the new tract the heads of all waters running into the Yosemite. It is of vital importance to keep these heads untouched, and Congress could do no more real service to the western country than preserve its great forests and thereby its water supply by creation and extension of national parks."
