FULLY TWO HUNDRED INJURED
Loss at Newcastle, Ind., Alone Will Reach a Million and is Heavy Throughout Storm's Path.
Newcastle, Ind., March 12.-Twenty-six bodies have been recovered and the search for more dead is being maintained in the wreckage created by the tornado of yesterday. It is believed that at least 10 or 20 bodies are buried in the ruins. The record of the tornado is as follows: Newcastle, Ind., 26 dead, 150 injured, loss $1,000,000; Cincinnati, 3 dead, 50 injured, loss $500,000; Trotland, O., two injured, loss $40,000.
Dayton, March 11.-Telephone reports from Richmond, Ind., say from thirty-five to seventy persons were killed at Newcastle, Ind., this afternoon in a tornado.
The tornado struck with terrific force at Newcastle, on the Chicago division of the Pennsylvania lines, after passing through Hagerstown, where two children were killed. Three seriously injured and a large number of houses demolished or unroofed. There are 700 to 800 people living at Hagerstown.
No definite estimate of the number injured is obtainable from Newcastle. The debris of the demolished homes in many instances covers the bodies of the dead and badly injured victims of the storm have been extricated.
The damage is believed to be a million at least. The storm swept a path through the city about two blocks wide, extending from Sixth street to Twenty-fifth street. About 100 houses were levelled and more than 300 damaged.
The storm passed through the south and west sides. The south side school building, rolling mills and shovel plant were destroyed.
Newcastle has a population of 15,000 and is known as the "city of roses", because of the large green houses located there.
All the hospitals in the city are crowded with the injured. The storm came from the west, striking the city in the northwestern section and traveled southeast, missing the business section of the town.
Word has been dispatched to Governor Goodrich to send troops to protect the wrecked homes from looters and to police the city. The destruction of the interurban power house threw the city in darkness.
