Two Atlanta Students Named In National Thrift Essay Contest

According to some 155,000 youths who entered the National Thrift Committee's Annual National Thrift Essay Contest, it pays to be thrifty!

This is especially true for two students in Atlanta who were national winners. John H. Wilson, C. W. Hill School, won the certificate of honorable mention in the Fourth to Sixth Grade Category; and Bruce H. Geigerman, Morris Brandon School, won the certificate of honorable mention in the Seventh and Eighth Grade Category. These certificates are given to second and third place national winners.

The first place winners for each of three categories were: Gary Watts, Tulsa, Oklahoma; Millicent Stukel, Chicago, Illinois; and Suzanna Lovett, Clearwater, Florida.

The National Thrift Essay Contest is launched locally each October and finalists are chosen for each school system entering. Each system's first three winning essays in the local contest were submitted to the National Thrift Committee for final judging.

The National Thrift Committee is made up of financial and civic institutions whose objectives are: to develop self reliance within the individual through the medium of savings; 2) to encourage a balanced economy at personal and governmental levels; 3 to further the knowledge that thrift in a free economy is basic in the future power and growth of this country; 4 to encourage, through education, a well-planned program of money management; and 5 to encourage capital formation as essential in economic growth and development.

More than 2,800 students from the fifth, sixth and seventh grades in the school systems of Atlanta and Fulton County participated in the Elementary Thrift Program in this area.

The program is sponsored locally by First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Atlanta. Mrs. Ludie Cornwell, secretary of the association has just returned from Washington, D. C., where announcements were made of the National winners.
