Full Text

The radical defection with Mr. Gladstone's Irish programme is said to be increasing. The radical leader, Mr. Chamberlain, has told a friend that Mr. Gladstone's Irish proposals involve so complete a separation of Ireland from the Union that it is impossible for the English to join in giving any guarantee to the landlords. Mr. Gladstone proposes to pay the Irish landlords some $600,000,000 for their lands. A convention of liberals in Belfast urged Gladstone to abandon the idea of home rule. It is reported that John Bright opposes the premier's Irish scheme. Messrs. Chamberlain and Trevelyan have resigned from the cabinet, but have consented to retain their seats for the present. It is expected that the Irish scheme will be laid before parliament this week.
