KEASBEY MAN
HELD IN BAIL

Charges of Hold Up and Assault Made Against Them
See Robbery Solution

John Romer, twenty-two years old, and George Mehok, twenty-one years old, both of Keasbey, are being held at police headquarters in default of $3,000 bail on two charges, holdup and assault and battery, as a result of their arrest by Patrolman Charles Jorgensen at 1:15 o'clock yesterday morning. The two men are alleged to have held up three men who were returning from a dance with their wives the holdup having occurred in the vicinity of Smith and Convery Streets.

Officer Jorgensen is today doing plainclothes duty with Detective Sergeant James Walsh, of the Woodbridge department, in an effort to connect the two men with several unsolved holdups committed in the township during the past several months.

Local Arrest

Romer and Mehok were picked up by Officer Jorgensen at 1:15 o'clock yesterday morning on complaint of Alex Popp, Gabor Bahary and James Tarce, all of Convery place. They told the policeman that they were returning from a dance on Kirkland place and near the corner of Smith and Convery place, Romer and Mehok started to argue with them. The three men were accompanied by their wives and after an exchange of words the Keasbey holdup men jumped on the Convery place residents. In the scuffle, Romer was cut about the forehead and Popp received a cut over the nose. No loot was obtained in the holdup, the police report shows.

In the possession of Mehok, the police officer found a .32 automatic revolver and eight bullets, and in court this morning, Mrs. Popp made known that Romer also had a revolver when the attack was made. The three men are the complainants in the holdup case, and Mrs. Popp makes a complaint against both men charging assault and battery. On the first charge, Mehok and Romer were each held in $2,000 bail and for the second charge, bail was fixed at $1,000. The weapon finding will be used as evidence in connection with the holdup charge.

Lieutenant Detective John Murray made known this morning that the two men would be printed today and they may be taken to New Brunswick tomorrow unless the Woodbridge investigators require more time for their questioning of witnesses.

Woodbridge police records and local records show that Romer was in trouble before.
