Full Text
John Woods.—The subject of the execution of this unfortunate boy, has been revived by the Jackson committee of Cumberland county, Maryland, by the publication of a statement signed "Geo. Brant," who says he was at the time of Woods' execution an enlisted soldier in the 7th regt. U. S. Infantry—which statement is now going the rounds of the Jackson papers. It would have been as well for their cause, if these papers had been content to treat this subject as they have that of the Mobile militia, viz. by giving it a bare denial—it will not stand an investigation.—Woods' captain, and six or eight of his fellow militiamen, prove this enlisted soldier's statement utterly false. Like Jephthah, the General had rashly sworn; his vengeance and would not retract.
