You have thought proper as one of a meeting to publish to the world that an injury has been done to the friends of Mr. Israel, (not to the People of the United States) by the vacation of his seat prompted as you say you believe, by men not friends to equal liberty—Do you or any person present at that meeting know the principles on which that seat was declared to be vacant? If you do, you have a degree of boldness unparalleled when you say that they do not consist with those of equal liberty. The best apology we can make for you is to suppose you wholly ignorant of the merit of that decision. Let me tell you the committee determined that every foreigner—of good character, who had shaken off his allegiance to his own country, and declared under the solemnities prescribed by our, laws that he would support the good order and happiness of this government was entitled to a vote. Would you have done more? Would you have suffered men whose characters were unknown and who had not given an evidence of their predilection for our government to participate in the sovereignty of the American People? Do you contend that every one whose private interests have brought him here, or whose public crimes have driven him from his own country shall the moment he touches the soil of America possess the power of legislating upon the rights of property, of personal liberty, and personal security? Are these your principles of equal liberty? If they are, I abominate them.

Every American, who considers the United States as an independent nation, and who wishes to render true liberty, which is inestimable in its value, immortal in its duration, will deprecate your sentiments.

An Enemy To Misrepresentation

Main Argument

the decision to vacate mr. israel's seat was based on requiring foreigners of good character to declare allegiance to the u.s. before gaining voting rights, upholding equal liberty; unrestricted voting for all arrivals, including criminals, is abhorred as contrary to true liberty.
