Destroyed-169 planes in combat, 188 on the ground.
Damaged - 45 planes on the ground; three by naval gunfire.
"Our own losses in this daring and highly successful strike," Nimitz said, "were 11 planes in combat, 10 pilots and five aircrewmen. There was no loss or damage to any of our surface ships."
Pacific fleet headquarters disclosed that American warships broke up a Japanese attempt to reinforce remnants of its garrison herded into the northwest corner of Peleliu in the Palau islands.
At least 10 and probably 13 barges, carrying men and equipment were wrecked by the warships which moved in close to blast the craft at close range. The barge convoy apparently came from Koror or other central Palau islands.
PELELIU FIGHTING
On Peleliu, the enemy force, now approximately one-quarter of its original size, still was fighting viciously in the treacherous terrain, reported to be the worst yet encountered in the Pacific.
Both Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur disclosed that their aerial forces continued widespread attacks on Japanese bases throughout the Pacific Friday.
(A Japanese broadcast, recorded by FCC, said American planes also raided Koror in the Palaus Saturday and Chichi Jima in the Bonins yesterday, while a force of 23 warships bombarded Japanese positions on Morotai, 250 miles south of the Philippines.)
