"She Can't Have Jimmy; He's Mine," Says Mrs. McQuaide

[Special to the Newark Star.]

NEW YORK, Jan. 22.--James P. McQuaide, the steel millionaire, finds himself in a peculiar situation as a result of the suit brought by Mrs. Sarah Sidebotham McQuaide for divorce and financial accounting.

McQuaide wanted to sail for Europe January 24, and go to Moleside, East Molesey, Surrey, England, one of his estates, but his wife won't let him; in fact, neither of his wives will. His present wife, formerly Miss Gertrude Reynolds, a Weber-Fields dancer, has engaged a lawyer, and intends staying in New York till she finds just where she stands.

Mrs. McQuaide told a reporter she had cleared over $300 in a performance she gave in her own theatre Christmas night in Miami, Fla.

"And if Jimmy hadn't got a toothache from playing Santa Claus for the children we would never got into all this trouble," she added.

The millionaire's toothache, it seems, brought him to New York. His coming in turn brought Mrs. Sarah McQuaide here, and she brought with her the papers in the suits she has brought against him.

Mrs. Sarah McQuaide claims the divorce obtained by McQuaide in Florida in 1907 is illegal in New York.

She wants the courts to grant her a divorce here on the grounds of his marriage to his present wife. This suit, naturally, has placed the present Mrs. McQuaide, who was married to Mr. McQuaide in Atlantic City in 1907, in an anomalous situation.

"That's a nice state of affairs, isn't it?" Mrs. McQuaide said. "I marry my husband, who's a perfectly good person, even if he has been married before, and take care of him and live with him five years and grow fond of him, even if he is getting fat, and then--"

Mrs. McQuaide caught her breath.

"Then along comes a woman who spent a lot of his money and wants to help spend what we have left and take Jimmy away from me by saying he's not divorced. But she won't. Not while I have a half-Nelson on him, even if it takes a couple of lawyers to help me keep it. I rather like him, beard, goatee and all, and I'm going to keep him. He appeals to me."
