Yesterday John L. Black, formerly of the well known firm of Black & Howell of this city, and John C. Fall, lately interested in a mill in the Humboldt country, and well known in this State and California, quarreled about some business matter which they were discussing in Mr. Black's place of business, under the Pacific Union Express office, when Mr. Black struck Mr. Fall several times upon the head with a hammer or bar of iron, cutting him terribly. When taken to his room at the International Hotel, Mr. Fall was completely covered with blood, and we were informed last evening that his injuries might result seriously. We believe there were no witnesses to the affair--at least we could hear of none--and yesterday little was known in regard to how the trouble occurred. Both gentlemen are well and widely known on the Pacific coast, and the affray astonished all who heard of it. Mr. Black gave bonds in the sum of $1,000 for his appearance before the Grand Jury.
We sincerely hope that Mr. Fall's injuries will not prove of a serious nature. The public cannot afford the loss of so good and enterprising a citizen as he.
