Full Text
There is land in California on which from seven crops of alfalfa have been raised in a year, and the land is not one whit better than average Mississippi soil. California farmers, however, realize that no soil, no matter how rich, can produce continuous crops without some method of replenishing the nitrogen and other chemicals drawn from it in the making of crops, and they are therefore necessarily lavish in the use of fertilizers. There is no doubt but that fertilizers are a paying investment on any soil, and while this fact is appreciated and fertilizers are used to a certain extent in this section, it would be well if our agriculturists would give the matter still more careful attention. The following, from the Carrollton Conservative, is true, every word of it, and we believe that if the farmers of this section would be more generous in the use of fertilizers they would reap the benefit in more luxurious crops:
Fertilizing the soil has been engaging the attention of the planters of the State for some time past, a number of whom regard their lands as amply fertile, while they gaze on in wonder at the farmer who realizes so much benefit by the use of the artificial process.
True enough, we have a splendid area of valuable lands, especially in Mississippi but in numerous instances where a system of fertilizing has been adopted, the results have been more profitable. The larger crops were made where fertilizing was adopted.
There are in Carroll county many farmers who have enriched their lands by the process, and the experiment has been the means of causing them to extend the method year after year over a broader area. They have found the cost but a trifle as compared with the magnificent results. Thus, it is conclusive, no matter how great your lands may be, they can be enriched three-fold by the use of fertilizer. It lessens the labor, and makes your lands more valuable. There should be a deep study of this by every farmer.
