Full Text

NASSAU, January 7.

The inhabitants of Dominica have of late been greatly alarmed by the violent outrages of the run-away negroes. The Antigua gazette of December 14, affords the following information on this subject.

"St. John's, Dec. 14. By a gentleman just arrived from Dominica we have the following horrid account of the outrageous proceedings of the run-away negroes there, which may be relied on.

"The number of these wretches having accumulated into a very large body, they proceeded to carry into execution their determined resolution of destroying the estate called Rosalie, which would have made 200 English hogsheads of Sugar this year, at least.

"Before they set fire to the estate, they laid hold of the driver, flogged him very severely, and afterwards put him to death by slow tortures.

"Having surrounded the works, they next killed the manager, and three white overseers, by wanton cruelties.

"On Saturday last the town of Roseau was falsely alarmed, by a report of the approach of these savages to the capital; many were preparing for a flight several ways, and some attempted to get on board the shipping for safety. But on better information their fears subsided.

"The heads of two of these miscreants have been cut off and brought to the town of Roseau, which our informant saw before his departure."
