For University Men

PARIS (A.P.)-The rising cost of living in Paris will not touch to any extent the thousands of students who are pouring into the Latin quarter for the opening of the University of Paris, the Polytechnic school and the dozen other institutions located there. Sessions begin the first week in November.
The old tradition of a full meal for less than two-bits still exists in scattered restaurants. Clothing stores along the Boulevard Saint Michel still promise students complete suits for $20 and hats for $1.75, with yet more interesting prices for those who get along, as many do, with pants of one color and coat of another.
A student in the Latin quarter can live two semesters on $230, not counting clothing, books and tuition. But he spends little for clothes and less for books. His courses are lectures and he has no prescribed text books. His general reading may be done in the library.
His tuition? He can study an entire year at the Sorbonne the faculty of letters of the University of Paris-for $5.60, including use of the library. If he enters a technical school he will have laboratory fees, but they are proportionately low. One of the most expensive private schools of higher learning charges but $60 a year for full privileges.
France does not know the student who works his way. Most professors refuse to pass a pupil whom they know to be putting in part of his time earning his daily bread instead of sipping wine or coffee in a cafe with comrades.
They feel that a student should spend all of his time in study or in thinking about it, and, contrary to American belief, they hold that one who works is less serious than one who does not.

The rising cost of living in Paris will not significantly affect students entering the Latin Quarter for the University of Paris, Polytechnic school, and other institutions, with sessions beginning the first week in November. Traditional low-cost meals, clothing, and living expenses persist, allowing a student to live two semesters on $230 excluding clothing, books, and tuition. Tuition at the Sorbonne is $5.60 per year, with low fees at other schools. French professors discourage students from working, emphasizing full-time study.
