Full Text

Mr. Fenno,

I have since the publication in the Aurora of the eighth of September, in which Mr. E. Tilghman's character is much traduced, been in Annapolis, and have enquired particularly whether Mr. Tilghman was (in the language of the letter) paraded through the streets of Annapolis under a strong guard, for crimes against his bleeding country. I was uniformly told and particularly by a man who was a firm friend to the revolution, was well acquainted with Mr. Tilghman, and who lived there during the war, that the statement was an infamous falsehood.

The charge contained in the extract of the letter as above recited, is flatly denied. The writer of this will submit his name to the publick, whenever the author of the extract shall come forward in support of the allegations, so insidiously offered against Mr. Tilghman. Such liberties taken with the characters of candidates for public offices, at the period of an approaching election, are very reprehensible; calumny and detraction should ever be despised, while candour and modest truth should meet with the countenance of all good men and FREE ELECTORS.
