Wednesday last arrived here the Sloop Hope, a Dutch Vessel, Daniel Harriot, Master; taken 18 Leagues to the Southward of Mona, by the Brig Mars Letter of Marque, Capt. M'Gillicuddy, of this Port. She is laden with Sugar, Coffee, and Indigo; mounts four Carriage Guns, 8 Swivels, and carries 25 Men. She came from the Cape bound to Curacoa.
On the 13th of February the Mars spoke with a Spanish Schooner off the West End of St. Thomas, bound to Old Spain, very richly laden, having on board fifty Chests of Plate, and about 200 Bags of Cocoa; all which M'Gillicuddy let slip through his Fingers, unfortunately not knowing War had been declared against Spain on the 4th of January 1762; But we are in hopes he got Intelligence of it soon after, and directly made a Push for the Treasure.
On the 16th of March the Mars fell in with two Sloops mounting 10 and 12 Guns, whom he was obliged to engage full four Glasses; when pouring a hearty Broadside into one of them, it threw the Sloop upon the Careen; and the Brig's Boom giving way at the same time they took the Opportunity to escape.
