New-York, June 6.
FROM THE SPANISH MAIN.
The arrival yesterday morning of the brig Hippomenes, from Curracoa, has furnished us with the following particulars of the movements of the two contending parties on the Main, in addition to those by the Cecilia, arrived at Philadelphia from Laguira:
General Bermudez, with a detachment of Patriot forces, was met and attacked, on his march against Caracas, near Rio Chico, by the Royalists under the command of Colonel Esturriz, and after a short contest, the latter were defeated. The troops that escaped joined the Valencia regiment, under Lieutenant Colonel Arbuthnot, re-attacked the Patriots near Guarenos, were again defeated, & Colonel Arbuthnot killed.
After these defeats the Captain General Correa, marched towards Petarre, in hopes of being reinforced; but meeting with disappointment, returned to Caracas, assembled a junta, and resolved to abandon the place, and many of the inhabitants rapidly left the city.
A fleet, consisting of about sixty sail of vessels, sailed from Laguira on the 15th, for Porto Cabello, under a convoy of a Spanish frigate, having on board passengers and property; but such was the confusion and hurry in embarking, that many respectable persons were compelled to depart with nothing but what was on and about their persons.
Accounts had been received at Curracoa, to the 8th of May, from Porto Cabello, informing that Gen. La Torre and Morales had formed a junction at Pao, (between Calaboza and San Carlos,) and near the Patriot Head Quarters, & a decisive engagement was shortly expected.
A report from Maricaibo, stated that a brig belonging to Brion's squadron, had lately been run ashore in the Gulf, and rendered unfit for service.
A number of vessels had arrived, at Curracoa from Cora, which brought over a number of the inhabitants, including the Governor and several civil and military officers. This movement was made in consequence of a threatened attack from the Independent forces in Maricaibo, who entered and took possession of Cora, on the 16th, without firing a shot. This is the first time that Cora has fallen into the hands of the Patriots notwithstanding repeated attempts to reduce it.
