The Annual Convention of the Protestant Episcopal
Church of the Diocese of Virginia assembled in this place
on Wednesday last.—There were about fifty clergymen,
and between 30 and 40 lay delegates in attendance. The
opening sermon was preached by the Rev. Mr. McGuire,
of Essex, which was followed by an appropriate address
from Bishop Meade. All the proceedings of the Convention, we learn, were conducted with harmony, and the
reports generally, from all parts of the Diocese, represented the Church to be in a flourishing condition. Owing to the continued infirm health of the Bishop, and
the great territorial extent of his labors, it was deemed
expedient by the Convention to elect an Assistant—and
the choice fell, with great unanimity, upon the Rev.
John Johns, D. D., Rector of Christ Church, Baltimore.
On Sabbath morning, the rite of confirmation was administered by the Bishop to fifteen persons; and the same day,
Mr. Chas. Gillett was ordained a Deacon, and the Rev.
Messrs. Caldwell, Macfarland, and Kinckle, (Deacons,)
were ordained Priests—Sermon on the occasion by the
Rev. Mr. Sparrow, of the Theological Seminary. The
Sacrament of the Lord's Supper was also administered
to a large number of communicants. The closing
scene at the Episcopal Church, on Sunday evening, was
of a most interesting character.—The parting address of
the Bishop was peculiarly happy, and made a visible
impression upon the audience.
There was much able and faithful preaching in all the
Churches of the town during the Convention—and we
can but hope that the meeting among us has been for
good.—It has been rich, to most of us, in social enjoy-
ment;—would that it might not be less so in spiritual
blessings.
