Caswell To Get Farm Experiments

College Station, Raleigh, May 1.—Caswell county has been selected for special work in the land use planning program of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, it was announced today by J. F. Criswell, of the State College Extension Service, who is directing this newest federal farm program in North Carolina. The rounded program of land use changes will be put into operation in that county in 1940 by the various federal, State and county agricultural agencies cooperating in the project. Criswell explained.

Caswell was selected by the State Land Use Planning Committee because it is representative of a large area of North Carolina in land use problems, and because many of the cooperating agencies are already operating in that county.

Criswell said that the first two phases of the program—mapping and classification—have been completed in Caswell, and in Harnett, Greene, Gaston, Camden and Transylvania counties, and that preliminary work in the recommendations phase has been done in Caswell. The recommendations phase will begin in Camden May 3, 4 and 5; in Harnett the week of May 8-13; and in Gaston the week of May 15-20. The first two phases of the program will begin in Rowan county on May 22.

More than 100 community and county committees meetings have been conducted by Criswell and his aides—J. P. Quinerly of the Extension Service and R. T. Melvin and W. H. Pierce of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics—since the program was started in February.

Criswell praised the cooperation received from county farm and home agents, and their assistants, and from representatives of the related agencies in the agricultural field. He also paid tribute to the unselfish and valuable counsel furnished by community and county committees of lay men and women, who map, classify and recommend land use changes in their respective areas.
