Extract of a letter from Plymouth 6th June.
Capt. Brewster, arrived last evening, picked up two boats, supposed to belong to the Chesapeake, one of them very much injured, being full of shot holes, the other very good, not the least hurt. She is painted white bottom, black waist, and green inside. Found in the boat an old sword, marked U. S. and a large shot the boat is about 25 feet long.
During the action between the Chesapeake and Shannon, a fishing boat from Plymouth was so nigh, that some of the shot went over her, and at 1 o'clock, the same night, a boat from Plymouth was in great danger of being run down by the Chesapeake. The Chesapeake was a-head of the Shannon.
It is the opinion of some gentlemen who saw the late battle, that the Shannon ran on board the Chesapeake, the latter having taken a position across the bow of the former at a short distance, for the purpose of raking her.
The challenge from Capt. Broke, which Capt. Lawrence had no opportunity of receiving, we understand has been sent to Washington.
It has been proposed to send off a flag of truce to Halifax, to ascertain the fate of the officers, crew of the Chesapeake, and the particulars of her capture. It is probable the flag will go this day."
