PRETENDED BENEVOLENCE.

Some men it is difficult to see through. They pretend to advocate benevolent projects, when self only is at the bottom. We have heard men talk eloquently of purchasing land and privileges for the benefit of their native places, when in fact most of the money expended would come into their own pockets. We have known men advocate laying out public squares and walks near their own dwellings, when if the truth were known, it was not the public good they cared a fig for, but their own convenience: They were fearful that houses would be erected that might cut off their fine prospect and injure their premises.

Such pretended benevolence as that we speak of, is rife at the present day. Many a man would pass himself off as quite a philanthropist, when self only is at the bottom of every thing he does.
