Full Text

To the interrogatory, "who is I. Bretano, of Chicago, who seeks the Republican nomination for secretary of state," the Springfield Register replies: "Bretano was the original editor and proprietor of the Chicago Staats Zeitung, which paper he sold to Mr. Hesing in 1865. Lately he has been United States consul at Dresden but was recalled for the purpose of making a place for the son of that E. W. Fox, of St. Louis, who gave up the secrets of the jury room in the Babcock case to Grant. He will probably have a hard time in his canvas for the nomination, as he will be opposed geographically by the friends of Beveridge and Shuman; on national grounds by Hamburgher and Rutz, and for official reasons by Scroggs and Harlow."
