BOUQUETS and BRICKBATS for Labor Pains

Dear Mr. Towle:

Your June 26th issue at hand.

This is my response to your invitation therein to write comments about column "Labor Pains."

So, let's examine Page 4—

Four and one-half inches devoted to T-V; and only five lines devoted to law-enforcement bureaus and intelligence of citizenry.

That's "much ado about nothing" -and merely an iota about the most vital importance in our existence!!

"Dr. Courtney" got 31 lines-

ALMOST as much "ado" there as in the first mentioned! (Yes, his name might have been Shapiro). My comment: Ask "Andrew J. Anonymous" if he wouldn't just as soon have Courtney, or Shapiro, or even T-V and baseball "settle the affairs of Dade County as to have Burton C. Nuckols do it?????

In general, as to the column:

I'm elated! I say pipe ALL T-V into the sewer or the insane asylums. I have reading, writing, and work to do with my time-and believe in preserving my eyesight and individual brains for things worthwhile. We CAN (and do) fool some of the people ALL the time-but can't fool all the people ALL the time! And my personal opinion is that millions are being FOOLED MOST of the time by T-V!! As to Courtney (who might be Shapiro) I admit of being one of his constant listeners, six nights the week-but I don't phone in. Somehow or other, he doesn't like my comments-and he shuts me off-even when I attempt to clear his errors about election procedures. Once, his star guest, Judge Giblin, thought I was one of the commies, apparently; and I got cut off with the admonition "Write a letter to the Newspapers"

But: Wherein does Mr. Anonymous discuss LABOR per se?? The Labor Citizen wears the garb of "being devoted to the best interests of ORGANIZED LABOR."

So, my conclusion from your editorial comments, Mr. Towle, would have me convinced that ORGANIZED Labor is concerned with T-V, with Baseball, with Alan Courtney, with Metro Government of Dade County, and with the big numbers (and big payroll) of POLICE DEPARTMENTS!

I like the column-because I like controversies, although I was reading Labor Citizen (subscribed to it) for OTHER REASONS. You have a nice little paper. Keep the column - but, is "Anonymous's" name SHAPIRO too?? Let's use REAL names-like Holland, Smathers, Warren, or Hoffa or Berlin or Herman.

Sincerely,

Ethel L. Rodgers

Main Argument

the 'labor pains' column in labor citizen devotes excessive space to trivial matters like tv, baseball, and personalities such as dr. courtney, while neglecting core organized labor issues, misleading readers about labor priorities.
