BLACKMAILING BROTHELS.

New York, Dec. 5 - The police say that they have evidence to prove that Charles W. Gardner, superintendent of Mr. Parkhurst's society for the suppression of crime, has lately been blackmailing the proprietors of disreputable houses in this city.

Detectives have been on Gardner's track for several days. They found in his apartments marked money and a gold necklace, which he took as bribes from Lily Clifton of 15 West Fifty-third street, who figures as complainant in a scandal. J. Chauncey Grant, ex-agent of Dr. Parkhurst's society, has also made a confession which implicates Gardner in the blackmailing of the keepers of brothels.

Gardner is now under arrest.
