Full Text
STANLEY MATTHEWS' nomination to the supreme bench seems likely to meet with vigorous opposition when it comes up for confirmation in the Senate. His chief eminence in the Senate was gained while fighting the cause of the Pacific railroads against the government, and his connection with the Louisiana electoral frauds in 1876 was of such a character as to leave his personal integrity under a cloud. A more unfit man for the position could scarcely have been selected, and he should be rejected without hesitation. The supreme bench is not a fit place for railroad attorneys or visiting statesmen.
