Full Text
Considerable excitement has been produced in this neighborhood a few days past, especially among the colored population, by the forcible transmigration of two or three of their number, (who had recently fled from the master's lash, and taken refuge in this province,) across the river, for the avowed purpose of conveying them back to their owners, at the South. A Mr. Tait, the chief agent in this business, it appears, had been reconnoitering the place, and laying his plans for some time previous; and on the 11th inst, six or eight white men, supposed from the other side, and at least two colored fellows engaged here, pounced upon their victims in the dead hour of the night, and succeeded in capturing and carrying off a colored family of the name of Sanford, consisting of the man and his wife, and a small child. Early in the following morning, the colored people rallied their forces, and rushed in pursuit of the enemy with all possible despatch; and the second day returned in triumph, with the captives in charge, having retaken them from their assailants some distance from Buffalo.—British American Journal
