BLAKELY - State Police are holding three men in custody in connection with the brutal sex-slaying of an 8-year-old Negro girl here Saturday night. The girl, Evon Holmes, was found by searchers near her home behind several buildings used for ginning after an all-night hunt.
The girl's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bunzie Holmes, teachers at Washington High School here, reported their daughter missing Saturday afternoon after she disappeared from playing on the front lawn.
Neighbors joined in the search. Her body was found brutally beaten as she was killed by several blows over the head with a blunt instrument.
One of the men being held was seen talking to the girl shortly before she disappeared, police said.
Coroner L. B. Jones said an inquest will be held after police have time to investigate.
