Full Text
Yesterday we received New York dates to the 27th ult. by which we have the report presented to the House of Representatives by Mr. McDuffie as Chairman of the committee of Ways and Means on the subject of the currency. It is very much praised by able economists as an intelligent exposition of sound principles and correct practical views, and coming here as it did immediately after the report of General Smith in the Senate, it afforded many of the friends here of your country, a proud reason for defending your institutions against the imputation, so frequently made of late, that they are never to be settled, but are eternally to be the sport of capricious opinion and unworthy political intrigue. These official reports in fact have done more for the credit of the United States, so far as it is founded on a belief in their political stability, and a confidence in the good sense, information, and honesty of your public men, than any documents that have made their appearance for the last ten years.
