Full Text
The court, in the Dreyfus case, reached a conclusion of guilty on Saturday and he was sentenced to ten years imprisonment. The verdict was no great surprise as there was an evident determination to convict him from the outset, whatever the evidence might be.
The testimony, as reported in the daily papers, showed very little proof against him. Most of it would not have been admitted in a court in this country and some of it was proven to have been forged.
There is a general feeling, not only in France but throughout the world, that the proof was not sufficient to sustain the charges.
There is great excitement in France over the result but there has been no serious outbreak so far. It is thought, however, that it will have a bad effect on the coming Paris Exposition, as other nations will hesitate about sending exhibits to a country where trouble may occur at any time.
There is some expectation that the prisoner may be pardoned, which may improve matters, though it will not satisfy his friends who believe him innocent.
