AN HUNDRED WATERLOOS
Here is another view of Cy Leland which is given to the world by the Ottawa Herald:
"Cy can go through a Waterloo and come out in better shape than any man who has ever had waterloos happen to him repeatedly. He has returned from St Helen a hundred times.
"He has met his Waterloo on the political field more often than any man in history.
"He has met a Waterloo early in the spring, living through it, and met one again the same year before frost, and been back at the old stand throwing nervous people into fits and defying Waterloos by Christmas of the same year.
"Read his history. He met his Waterloo when Morrill was nominated for governor the second time; he met it when Baker was elected senator; he met it again when Billy Sterne was appointed United States marshal.
"Waterloo came up and hit him a swat on the right cheek when Mike Sutton was appointed internal revenue collector. The old thing came back and met Cy again at Horton when he failed to nominate Bailey for congress last fall. Waterloo then took about two weeks and met Cy again at the Hutchison state convention when Major Hood, Cy's candidate for governor, was defeated for the nomination.
The reason why it takes so many 'Waterloos' to kill Cy Leland is because he is an uncompromising Republican.
"John J. Ingalls met with one Waterloo and it made him a prince of calamity howlers until he had done his party incalculable disaster. Cy Leland has met a hundred Waterloos, both from his own party and from the common enemy, but he has come up from every defeat, whether personal or general, with graceful acquiescence in the other fellow's victory. He has never said a word to injure his party's success in any campaign.
"We could name a dozen strong Republican leaders who have bolted their party, but Cy Leland never did. No fight he has ever made embarrassed the party at the polls. No licking he ever got made him sour on the successful nominee. He's a Republican before everything else; party success is always his highest aim and that's why a Waterloo doesn't kill him off like it does some people. Cy Leland goes into more fights than any other individual politician and is consequently whipped oftener; but he is always on his feet, always strong, whether in defeat or in victory, always waiting cheerfully for the next Waterloo.
Another Waterloo, more or less, won't hurt Cy."
