The airtight closed shop is granted in the new contract between Local 295, UAW-CIO, and the Wayne Screw Products Co. of Detroit, signed June 8.
The closed shop is given by the wording of two sections in the contract. Sec. 1 of Art. 1 reads: "The company recognizes the Intl. Union, UAW, Local 295, affiliated with the CIO. as the bargaining agent for its employes who are now or shall become members of Local 295, UAW-CIO on or before July 10, 1939 . . . "
Sec. 1 of Art. 3 reads: "6 . . . For the purpose of this agreement the term employe shall mean only members in good standing of Local 295, UAW-CIO."
The contract forbids foremen or assistant foremen to do the work of any other employe during or after any shift. It forbids piece-work. The minimum unskilled rate is 75 cents an hour, minimum skilled $1.20.
For the union the contract was signed by Bros. John O'Shaughnessy, Peter G. Appel and Intl. Rep. Jos. F. Pagano. It was approved by Regional Director Leo Lamotte.
