DELAWARE
The State and Congressional Elections, are just over. In all, the party lines were drawn, and in all from Congress to a Sheriff, the Jacksonians were defeated. Even the county of New Castle, always Jacksonian before by considerable majorities, has this year declared for Clay. Mr J. J Milligan is elected to Congress in place of Mr Jones declined. His antagonist was Mr. Ridgely, formerly a Senator of the U. States.
While the Jacksonians are boasting of inconsiderable gains and doubtful results in the Eastern extremity of the Union, defections in the middle States, the centre and heart cause, them serious apprehensions for the permanent ascendancy of the Party —
A circular from Pennsylvania gives the assurance, that Clay has gained and is gaining and that this will be demonstrated. In New York the Regency only expect to succeed, by the divisions among its enemies.
From the Delaware Journal
VIVA FOR DELAWARE.
THE ELECTION. The result of the election on Tuesday last, in this county, is as Follows:
Hundreds.
Milligan's majority
Appelby's
351
Showing a majority of four for John J. Milligan, the National Republican candidate for Congress, and of three hundred and sixty four, for Marcus E. Carritt, the National Republican candidate for Sheriff, in the county of New Castle! On this extraordinary result, we shall not indulge in any unbecoming exultation: but we simply refer to the fact, that last year, our opponents had a majority in this county of 512, and a majority in every hundred of the county, except Pencader, which gave to Mr Hazzard one vote more than his opponent. In the hundred of Christiana, Mr Thomson's majority, last year, was 144: this year, Mr Milligan, the National Republican candidate, has a majority of 117, and respectable majorities in five different hundreds.
The votes in Christiana hundred amounted to 1075: the largest election ever known in the hundred.
We have stated the majority for Milligan, in Christiana hundred, at 117; the number said to be ascertained by our friends who looked over the tallies at the close of the counting of the tickets. Immediately after this duty was completed, the Inspector took the tally lists to a tavern, in direct violation of the law, which requires, that the number of votes given for each candidate should be ascertained and certified, and that the tally lists and certificates shall be signed by the judges and clerks and deposited with the box with the ballots which is then to be sealed—and all this before they leave the place where the votes were counted out. Without performing any of these duties, the Inspector, although warned of his legal duty in the case, took the lists away, as we have stated, and completed his duties we know not where or how. We are now informed, that the majority for Mr Milligan, according to the Inspector's return, is 91! Upon this matter and upon the subject of the election generally, we shall at present, postpone further remark.
Mr. Milligan's majority in Kent is 74-in Sussex 350-total majority 424-Dr William Burton, the National Republican candidate for Sheriff, in Kent, is elected by a majority of 116. The National Republican candidates for the Legislature, in both counties have succeeded by considerable majorities-in Kent, the average majority was 175.
We congratulate our friends every where upon the result of this election. Little Delaware remains, where she begun, firm to her principles. Her banner is hung upon the outer wall for HENRY CLAY.
