Full Text

Not a little outcry arose, a week or two ago, when the Austrian Commissioners at the Centennial closed their department in the Art Gallery and asserted that some of their pictures had been injured by visitors. It now seems that only one or two trifling injuries have been done to any of the paintings, and those not by visitors at all but in unpacking. The diatribes, therefore, on the vandalism of sight-seers, and the descriptions of their habits of poking the pictures with their umbrellas, and tapping the statues to see whether they are marble or plaster, &c., &c., are largely thrown away—splenetic complaints wasted on the winds.
