A Visit To Annapolis

After attending to some business in Baltimore on Friday my brother and I decided to go over to Annapolis and see what was happening to the Sunday Sale Bill which was reported as being the special business before the Senate that day. We arrived at the Capitol just as the Solons were starting home for the "Week-end", but soon found Mr. Rowland in the House Chamber and he did not take long in telling us that the Sales Bill had been tabled by that Body. The whys and wherefores he seemed a little at a loss to explain, but was surprised and disappointed at the outcome. In the Corridor we met Senator Squier and he did not have much to say as to why the Senate "passed the buck" to the House. He did reaffirm his opposition to the substitution of the 2 P. M. to 2 A. M. proposition. We soon saw that more tricks had been played and the matter settled for the present with no further restrictions on Sunday business. Some other matters favored by the house await action of the Senate, such as the Fire-works Bill, and the Jury Duty for Women Measure. On the way home we stopped in Baltimore to see Mr. George W. Crabbe to get his reaction on the situation as we were sure he had been at the scene of action that day. He was quite frank in his statement that in all his contacts with the Maryland Legislature he had never seen such a piece of trickery pulled off. He did say tho that Cecil Delegates voted right on the question, which is satisfaction. And we also are glad our Senator did not yield on the compromise but as the Senate acted behind closed doors what happened there is not generally known, and the bill was finally in open session returned to the Temperance Committee for safe keeping. Lets hope nothing happens to disrupt the closed Sundays in Cecil Co.

Bertha Balderston,
Pres. Cecil Co. W.C.T.U.
