RATIONING RUMORS
(Sacramento Bee)
Rumors that coffee was to be returned to the rationed list produced a mild run on some grocery stores in Sacramento and elsewhere.
The rumors were based on statements by high officials of the Office of Price Administration that Brazilian exporters were holding their coffee supplies awaiting higher prices and that unless the situation was eased rationing might have to be resumed early next year.
Subsequently, Brazil agreed to ship sufficient coffee to the United States to assure coffee drinkers adequate supplies for many months to come.
The incident, however, served to illustrate that many persons have not gotten over the rationing jitters. The democratic method is for the government to keep the people informed regarding the status of supplies of all articles which might become subject to rationing.
However, if vague hints of shortages are to produce runs on such articles it may be necessary to restore the technique of spot announcements.
