York, Penn. Sept. 15.
The ingenious Mr. Timothy Kirk, of this place, who has added several valuable discoveries to the arts of civil life, especially, a machine for weaving Paper-moulds, and a machine for grinding Tanner's bark, has lately invented a method for Boiling, which requires nothing but to be put into practice, to render it of the most extensive utility. It is the application of artificial heat, upon a plan entirely new; and can be varied, so as to be of the greatest advantage in all kinds of boiling and Evaporation, and in vessels of all capacities, from the Tea-kettle to the Brew-kettle. The construction is very simple: The boiler or vessel is made of wood, and will cost very little, when compared with the expense of iron or copper vessels; and, by fair experiments, it has been ascertained, that one-fifth of the fuel, necessary to boil a given quantity in the common way, is sufficient to boil the same quantity, in the boiler invented by Mr. Kirk.
He has erected one at the Sulphur Springs, in Adams county, for the purpose of making an artificial hot-bath, which contains six barrels. Another, on a smaller scale, and portable, has been made by him for a Gentleman in this town, designed for culinary purposes; in both which experiments have been made, which exceeded the most sanguine expectations.
It is the opinion of a gentleman, an experienced Navigator, who examined it, that it can be applied, with singular advantage, to boiling on board vessels. As soon as Mr. Kirk has obtained a patent for this invention, it is expected he will favor the public with an exact description of it.
