Nashville (FP)—GI bullets ripped the Crump machine to shreds in one Tennessee county in the state's Aug. 1 primary, but less well armed voters in the other 94 counties saw Senator Kenneth McKellar sweep into a 2 to 1 victory over Edward W. Carmack for another six-year term.
Tennessee is controlled politically by the reactionary forces led by Edward H. Crump of Memphis, who has ruled for many years without a serious threat. He is an enthusiastic McKellar supporter.
McKellar, dean of the Senate and now its president pro tem, was never in danger although opposed by the CIO Political Action Committee and a large part of the state AFL.
In McMinn County, located about halfway between Chattanooga and Knoxville, a bi-partisan group of war veterans forced through their slate of county officers over the determined opposition of Crump Democrats in a contest highlighted by a six-hour gun battle at the county jail in Athens.
The gunplay came after a group of veterans were met by bullets when they sought to watch the ballot counting upon receiving a pledge that votes would be counted as cast. They finally blasted the incumbent political forces and their armed deputy sheriffs out of the jail and won a concession of victory.
McKellar, on the basis of incomplete returns, had about 166,000 votes to 106,000 for Carmack, with the largest share of his majority coming from Shelby County (Memphis).
In the gubernatorial race, Governor Jim N. McCord, running with McKellar on the Crump ticket, won the Democratic nomination over ex-Governor Gordon Browning, 165,000 to 106,000.
