EDMUNDS SPEAKS AT SUMTER SCHOOL
Sumter Man Lectures on Compulsory Education
(Columbia State).

Dr. S. H. Edmunds, superintendent of the Sumter city schools and professor of English in the University of South Carolina summer school, lectured yesterday morning at 10 o'clock in the chapel on "Compulsory School Attendance." Dr. Edmunds will speak again this morning on the same subject.

The addresses have been one of the strongest and most popular features at the summer school session, which closes its six weeks' course the last of this week.

The lecture yesterday morning demonstrated that the teacher is largely responsible for the desirability of school attendance. The teacher is the school and if the school is to be desirable the teacher must be worthwhile, declared Dr. Edmunds.

"Teachers have been relying entirely too much upon others to assume educational leadership," he said. "They should direct the educational policies of their great profession. In addition to this, they should be so entirely worthy as members of this profession as to make it highly desirable for boys and girls to attend the public schools.

'In order to be a worthy member of the teaching profession one should have a broad and deep scholarship with a background of rich culture, should have ability to teach and should have that inherent and indispensable quality of the power to govern. True obedience is ready response to one's wishes expressed or implied. From early childhood one should learn to obey and in order to attain the ideal of true obedience it may be necessary for one to be forced to comply but the ideal must not be lost and that is a ready and willing response.

"The gravest responsibility that rests upon teachers is the realization that no obedience can be true if the recipient is unworthy. The father who says to his son 'do as I say, not as I do' can never have an obedient son. The sovereign who in making laws for his subjects puts himself above the law is a tyrant and his subjects are his slaves. Rebellion has forever run rampant in Russia."
