December 31st,

Fellow Citizens,--A high sense of the respect due to you and your good opinions. Regard for the feelings of some friends who generously defended my reputation against the hideous calumniations. Perchance a feeling to be cast on my character in my absence, and during recent events. Right that I shall love be so. A statement of the disbursement of the funds generously contributed by you to aid in the outfit and support of the company of volunteers from Lancaster District, S.C.

To the Committee of gentlemen of Lancaster District, who raised funds to the amount of eight hundred and seventy-seven dollars eighty-eight cents ($877 88 cents) in my hands for the benefit and support of the Lancaster Volunteers until they should join their Regiment, was submitted a statement of disbursements to the amount of six hundred and seventy-two dollars and seventy-two cents ($672 72 cents) with Gen. Canty's receipt for this amount, together with receipts from members of said company for money advanced them, and receipt of other persons for supplies furnished to the amount of two hundred and twelve dollars and thirty-seven cents ($212 37 cents) for which amount all committee gave the following certificate.

"On the 14th of Jan. 1836, Capt. R. Gibson submitted to us for our investigation, statements of disbursements by him during the Campaign against the Seminole Indians, amounting to two hundred and forty-two dollars and thirty-seven cents ($242 37 cents) which we believe to be correct."

JOHN J. BOYDEN

This amount of $212 37 cents was paid out in the purchase of knapsacks, knapsack bags and many other articles not properly chargeable to the Government, together with money advanced to individuals.

In my possession are vouchers on other Volunteers, amounting to thirty dollars ($30) which from various causes, were not shown to the Committee. The latter sum added to the preceding, makes the amount expended and advanced in the aggregate, nine hundred and thirteen dollars ($913) which all unreservedly expenditure of my individual funds in the amount of seventy-five dollars ($75) to the benefit and use of the Volunteers.

Which most clearly proves the high regard for truth, in those who set in circulation the report, that I had not expended the money put into my hands for the support of the company, as directed by those who gave the same, but had converted the money to my private use.

The author of this statement, I am at all times prepared to prove a base slanderer.

On arriving at Savannah (Georgia), at which place the Volunteers from Lancaster were mustered into the service of the United States, I received no advance from the first and second Lieutenants, the company; on the contrary, I was had (by them) to carry money of boarding and preventing the mustering of this company into service.
