HYPOCRITES AND SEGREGATION

We have just read a newspaper story about the second assembly of the World Council of Churches recently held in Evanston, Illinois.

This article quotes Reverend Dr. J. Clinton Hoggard, of Washington, D. C., a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.

He had some biting things to say about the effort of some of the churches that he called "so-called white churches" to recruit membership among the negroes.

He said this recruiting campaign is only a plot to silence the voices of the negro clergymen in fighting for equal rights for themselves.

"Take a look at the leaders at the assembly. Do you see any negroes among them?" he asked.

"In fact", he continued, "The only full-fledged negro delegates here are from some negro denominations."

"Those denominations who are integrating negroes into their membership have no negroes here as delegates."

The statements by this negro clergyman emphasize the fact that a lot of our church leaders who are advocating the mixing of the races in the churches are hypocritical in their attitude. Those who want negro members do not want negro preachers.

Likewise, the white preachers who are preaching that it is the duty of Christian people to mix the two races do not want their daughters marrying negro boys and neither do they want a negro preacher to take their place in the pulpit. On the contrary, they wish to keep their job.

And it just shows that the leaders in this movement to mix the races are as hypocritical as they can be. We have yet to find one with a single bone of sincerity in his body.

Yet, they are creating a sickly philosophy amongst some of their members which is causing their consciences to hurt because they are not sending their children to school with negro children, admitting negroes into the church pews along with them and the members of their families are not marrying up with the negroes.

To soothe the hurt of their consciences caused by this sickly philosophy, they are preaching the mixing of the races in the schools and in the churches but in such a manner that it won't touch those who preach it.

They still think it is something to be endured by the poor white folks.

Now it is certainly a sick philosophy that can soothe its conscience by forcing the poor white folks to endure the hardships of the mixing and mingling of the races.

When these preachers are willing to surrender their jobs in the pulpit to some negro preacher, for their daughters to marry negro boys and to go whole-hog on this question of mixing the races, they can be said to be sincere.

Otherwise, they are a bunch of stiff-shirted hypocrites trying to force the other fellow into doing the one thing that they would rather die than do.

Hypocrisy ought to even get out of the churches.
