COMPLETES GRADING
About Four Thousand Teachers Took The First Uniform Examination.
Charleston, W. Va., May 29.—The State Department of Schools has just completed the grading and sent out the certificates of the recent uniform examination—the first during the present year. The figures available in that office show that 3,973 persons took the examination, as against 4,101 for the first examination last year.
Comparing the results of the first examination this and last year shows that five first grade certificates were issued last year against four this year; 224 second grade certificates were issued last year against 223 this year; 1,111 third grade against 888 this year; 3,027 failures against 645 this year.
The failure total is frequently misleading. (As an illustration an applicant may take say a dozen of the fourteen grades and secure a grade high enough to give a first grade certificate, but will be classed as a failure because all the fourteen grades were not taken. The same person, however, is permitted to take the other two grades at the examination in the same year and if he or she reaches first grade figures for these two a first grade certificate will be issued. This accounts for the small number of first grade certificates issued as a result of the first examination each year. While but four first grade certificates were issued from this examination there were 213 renewals, which means that that number holding first grade certificates have had their time extended five years.)
The total number of first grade certificates issued last year, not including renewals, was 280, and it is expected that number will be exceeded this year, following the examinations to be held June 8-9 and August 10-11. Last year the applicants for renewals were 138 against 213 for the same period this year.
According to Prof. Longanecker who is in charge of the grading, there are now 3,400 first grade and 5,000 second grade certificates in force in the state, or just about the number of school rooms in the state.
The four first grade certificates came from: Marion county, 2; Pleasants, 1, and Wood, 1.
