Full Text

Carl Schurz delivered his new lecture, "Centennial Thoughts," in Boston on Thursday evening. It is not a display of rhetoric, but is an earnest discussion of subjects vitally important to the country and its honor and fame as a nation. He said our government as constituted by the fathers was the true representative of the best thought, the noblest efforts, and the highest qualities of the American people, but as it existed to-day it showed a steady decline from this standard, although it had prospered in material things. This decline was due to corruption and the lack of statesmanship. The fathers he said, would stand fairly aghast at the monstrous abortion which exists, and exclaim with scornful disgust, "Is it this you have made of the fair fabric we transmitted to your hands, to be the embodiment of liberty, wisdom, purity and honesty? Is it this you have made of it?" If they could be present, they would say, "Spend a little less time in praising our virtues and a little more in following our example."
