What is this article about?
This editorial mocks Van Buren Democrats' hypocrisy in claiming to respect the 'voice of the people' only when it aligns with their victories. It cites Kentucky's rejection of R.M. Johnson as vice president by over 3,000 votes, yet a Dr. Rudd's resolution to instruct senators Clay and Crittenden to support him anyway.

What consistent souls some of the Van Buren teetotallers are? When the "party" obtain a victory in an electoral contest, they forthwith proclaim the result as the "voice of the people," which, in all cases, must be regarded; and admonish their opponents of the impropriety and injustice of opposing any thing that has been sanctioned by the popular voice, however wrong it may be in theory, or injurious in practice, or however obtained, whether by honest means, or by fraud, corruption, and false pretences. The voice of the people is never wrong, when they are the victors, but when otherwise, it ill suits their taste. Witness an instance.
The people of Kentucky, at the late presidential election, decided by a majority of more than three thousand votes, that they did not want the Patriarch of the Great Crossings to fill the second office in the nation. Could a more clear demonstration of the wishes of the people of Kentucky been asked, or obtained? The candidate was a citizen of the State, had for many years been one of its representatives in Congress, and his merits and demerits were probably as well known by the people of Kentucky as by the people of any other State in the Union; yet, by their votes they declared that they did not want him for a Vice President. In the face of this decisive expression of the popular wish, a Dr. Rudd has had the hardihood to offer, in the Legislature of Kentucky, a resolution, instructing Messrs. Clay and Crittenden to vote for R. M. Johnson for Vice President! This is respecting the voice of the people with a vengeance—obedience to the popular wish a la Van Buren democracie. Col. Johnson ought forthwith to appoint this zealous Pilgarlic chief physician of his household.
