On July 2nd "Operation Leaky Arm" was brought to the institution by the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Due to late publishing of their coming visit, the response to this blood drive was not up to expectations. There were only 133 volunteers and, of these, the Red Cross collected 114 pints of blood.
Dr. Bock was the attending physician for the Red Cross and on hand to assist in the blood collection were 6 nurses and 4 volunteer Red Cross workers. Miss Rygh was the nurse in charge, and she informed the MIRROR editor that they would advise us of their next visit with at least a two-week notice.
Last time the collection was only 85 pints donated, then also, late information of the coming visit was the main reason for the poor showing. Miss Rygh felt that the next visit (with proper publication of forthcoming visit) would make up for the last two donations.
When the next opportunity comes again, it is hoped that a greater turnout will partake in this worthwhile project. No ill effects are experienced from giving blood as the body replaces the blood in less than twenty-four hours. More important, it gives everybody a certain rise in self-respect after helping another human being.
In closing, the men who did donate were appreciative of the refreshments that were provided by the Red Cross and, for sure, most of them will be back again for the next visit of the new named "Operation Leaky Arm."
