Extract of a letter from York-Town. Oct. 19.
"Return of the British army at York and Gloucester: 2 regiments artillery, 2 of guards, 2 of light-infantry, 7 of foot, viz. 17th, 23d, 33d, 45th, 71st, 76th, and 80th; 3 regiments Anspachers. Hereditary Prince's regiment of horse, Simcoe's and Tarleton's legions ditto, & 1800 Negroes: in all about 7000, exclusive of good seamen, a British regiment number unknown, and 4 companies of Yagers: 10 pieces of brass cannon, 150 iron ditto, 900 barrels of beef, and pork, 300 ditto flour, 150 firkins butter, 70 barrels powder, 80 ships, large and small. Remainder not come to hand."
Upon the receipt of the intelligence to Congress, of the surrender of Cornwallis, and his whole army, to the confederated arms of France and America, their Door-Keeper was so overjoyed at the unexpected glorious capture, that he fell down and instantly expired.
Congress have recommended to the several States, to set apart the thirteenth day of December next, to be religiously observed as a day of THANKSGIVING and PRAYER.
