We announced in our last, that the Whigs of the great Emporium of America had triumphed in their late charter election, and that Mr Aaron Clark was the successful candidate. But we forgot to add that this distinguished citizen was a native of Vermont and formerly resided for a long time in Whiting, we believe, in the county of Addison,—which, if we are correctly informed, is the fact, and which of course, contributes in no small degree to the pride and pleasure we take in recording this astonishing triumph of principle, where aboundeth so much political turpitude.
Our readers will furthermore be amused with the following incident, in relation to the subject, which we find in "the Star of the first magnitude"—or Noah's Last:—
"During the days of the election, among other extraordinary events that portended the downfall of the old Tammany Rookery, was the appearance of a noble eagle from the Green Mountains of Vermont, Mr Clark's native State, was borne along the streets, perched on the American Ensign, through every Ward and to every poll, followed by martial band playing National airs; he flapped his wings and darted his fiery eyes, seemed to penetrate confidence to the Whigs. They looked upon it as an omen and that the emblem of our banner had come to rouse them to a determination to wipe from it the stains of political corruption."—N. Y. Evening Star.
