Our Free Fountains—Take a Drink.
We have placed two free fountains in front of this office for the benefit of all who choose to refresh themselves with that indispensable element, water. We trust that in making this offering the cause of temperance will be immediately and practically promoted, while no one will be injured. On any warm day men can be seen at water plugs making strenuous efforts to assuage a natural thirst, and if facilities are furnished thousands of citizens will avail themselves of the opportunity to obtain a free drink. This want we have supplied, as far as we are able, by providing fountains of pure water and clean cups. In summer many poor men are compelled by thirst to enter bar-rooms to obtain a drink, spending money which they could not well afford to part with, at the same time putting that into their mouths which will steal away their brains—and hats. Bar-rooms and looking through glasses may be relish enough for those who have time and money, but the poor must be provided for, and we have made a commencement. Who will follow our example!
A thousand free fountains would prove a blessing to our inhabitants, and perhaps would save much suffering and degradation. All are invited to come and drink.
