HIS EXCELLENCY JOHN TYLER.
We feel gratified, whenever we have an opportunity of testifying our high respect for the distinguished statesman and patriot, whose name heads this article. In comparison with the great benefits which Mr. Tyler has conferred upon his country, how plainly does the insignificance of many of the brawlers in Congress, and out, show itself in their struggle for distinction, which they make more conspicuous by appropriating his labors to their credit, and affecting to look down upon the mighty man who gave life and being to the party to which they are attached, as the sun's vivifying beams pour life and fecundity on the earth.
As sure as there is truth in heaven, or justice in man, the time will shortly arrive, when the great masses of the people will throw off the vile shackles of party, and rise in their might, to do "Justice to John Tyler." Party men would claim the honor of annexing Texas to this Union—but it was John Tyler's Act! and the people of this country know it—the people and authorities of Texas avow it? It was his, and his alone—and to him be all the honor and the glory.
We well recollect when a miserable wretch, although a United States Senator, and a professed member of the Democratic party, for the purpose of injuring John Tyler, violated his oath, and broke the seal of secrecy imposed by the Senate, and feloniously made public the Texas affair; we spoke of that act with Mr. Tyler at the time, and we well recollect his remark: "I am glad," said he, "that it has been made public, for I desire no secrets to be kept from the American people; the act will defeat itself, and precipitate annexation—the people are honest and wise, and will act right, with the facts before them." The result has fulfilled his prediction, and confirmed his faith. We, too, believe the day will come, when all the facts will be made known to the American people, and then they will sustain and uphold the man, who, after Jackson, has done more for his country, by his inflexible adherence to principle, than any other man now in the nation. We take pleasure in laying the following resolutions, which were offered by Senator Robinson, to the consideration of the Texas Senate, and adopted unanimously by that body, before our readers.
Resolved, That the thanks and highest confidence of the Senate, be tendered to the great friend of civil liberty, the ex-President, JOHN TYLER, for the very able and consistent course he pursued, while discharging the high and important duties of Chief Magistrate of the United States.
Resolved, further, That the successful termination of his magnanimous and masterly efforts, to effect the object of Annexation, entitles him to the grateful thanks of the friends of civil and religious liberty wherever they may be.
Resolved, further, That the Secretary of the Senate furnish the Ex-President, JOHN TYLER, a copy of these resolutions.
