Full Text

The Nashville Union, in a long article upon the position of Douglas, thus sums up:
"Under the Republican plan the citizens of the South may be excluded from the Territories by a free soil majority in Congress. Under Judge Douglas' plan the first settlers of a Territory, belonging in common to the people of all the States, may deprive the citizens of one section of the Union of the right to participate in the enjoyment of the common domain, by prohibiting them from emigrating thither with their property. We cannot choose between the two theories, for they are both utterly unconstitutional, unjust, unequal in their operations, and subversive of the rights of the people of the States. We sincerely hope that we shall never be forced to choose between the advocates of these dangerous and disorganizing doctrines."
