Hundreds of Thousands of Employers Said Not Paying Tax
Copyright, 1937, by United Press
WASHINGTON, Dec. 30. (UP)
Hundreds of thousands of employers have not been complying with tax payment requirements of the Social Security Act and treasury investigators and the social security board have been cooperating in a nation-wide drive to bring them into line. It was learned last night.
The campaign was begun several weeks ago when payments into the social security fund fell far below the amounts anticipated. During one month, it was disclosed, the investigators discovered 100,000 delinquents, and thus saved millions of dollars to the government.
Nearly all the evasions are of unintentional character, one official said, and the investigators concentrated on getting the employers to comply voluntarily, through education and warning, rather than invoke the stringent penalty provision of the law.
